  1. This week's lesson was quite interesting as we got to learn more about Privacy on the internet, something, which is a much debated topic throughout the world.

We got to learn a lot about the how the information we put on the internet can cause us harm. The videos shown on how people's information, that they posted on the internet. I felt sad for the little girl whose photo were used for the wrong purpose however the other case about the couple whose personal photos were spread on the internet. The husband wanted to share the photos with his friends and someone else got their hands on the photos and the photos were later spread to many other sites. I feel that the husband was rather stupid as people normally do not share these type of pictures with their friends. Despite this, I feel that it is really scary how people now are able to find out everything about us.

Now I view online privacy as a more important thing in my life. As now I am aware of the fact that if I do not have the proper privacy setting my information can be easily exploited by other people.

Since then I have made the necessary amendments to my privacy settings, to ensure that something like this never happens to me.

The second half of the lesson was about technologies that are able to track our whereabouts. I already knew about some of the technologies like the GPS and CCTV. The only new thing I actually learnt was the RFID. The idea of people tracking us using things we buy is really scary and the fact that some of these RFID chips can take photos of us was really fascinating. The Idea of having CCTV surveillance of every street in London is really scary. Knowing that I am being watched at every step of my way, is really not a comforting feeling. Yes I agree, that it will eventually help police solve crimes faster, but at the price of the public's privacy.

In conclusion i feel that this was really a nice lesson which was able to help us better understand the dangers of not protecting our privacy on the internet. We also got to know more about how privacy is threatened by the technologies that are use to track people.

  2. It is true that our privacy these days is largely compromised. However, I feel that it is really up to an individual on what information he/she wants to put up on these social networking sites such as Facebook. By creating an account, your privacy is not the same as before. However, there are still settings to let our information be known ONLY to the people whom we know. Although people will now know more about yourself, but it is still the chosen information that you wish to let others' know.

Furthermore, it is possible to decline friend adds from strangers, thus we are still able to control a certain limit to which our information is made known to others. I feel that as long as we know how to protect ourselves, it is still possible to have a fair amount of privacy in our lives. We can choose not to use these sites such as foursquare, where our location is being made known to the public. It is not necessary and such applications are just for own entertainment. If an individual wants their location and other information be made known to others, he/she have to face any dangers or consequences which may follow after.

All in all, I feel that everyone has the obligation to protect themselves and know what is in stall for them given their actions in the virtual world.

  3. I believe that privacy is a very important aspect of everybodies' life. Without it, it's like losing our basic human rights.

With the increase usage of social networking sites like facebook and twitter,we not only can share photos and information about ourselves, we can also "give" our personal information to strangers.

Why do I say this? By using Facebook check-ins and 3rd party applications like Foursquare to perform "check-ins" on facebook, we are pretty much telling people where we are at and what we are doing. This makes things easier for stalkers, kidnappers, paedophiles etc. I know I may be exaggerating, but we can never dismiss the fact.

Also, with so much information with post online, there will bound to be a time in the future, when someone make use of it to our disadvantage or their advantage.

Yes, you may say that there are many settings on the many social networking sites to protect our privacy or even display our information to only specific people. But in reality, we usually display the information we post to the general public as we want to let other people know about us. It is our desire for attention that cause us to lose our privacy.

Although I already know that we have to be careful about what I post online, I usually do not heed this advice given to me. However, after this lesson, I am reminded to ensure that my privacy is protected.

I remember there was an incident in my secondary school, whereby a comment on facebook by a student lead to many problems in school. This just shows how people can take online information seriously and react to it.

Below is the answers to Session 2's activities :

This kind of GPS service is definitely useful when it comes to finding a stolen/lost handheld device or locating a lost person. However such a powerful service can easily be misused. Stalkers can easily make use of such service to track down someone and cause harm to that person.

This kind of GPS service infringes a person’s rights to seclude themselves. You can’t just track somebody without the person’s consent and knowledge. I strongly disagree with having such a service in Singapore. It will cause everyone to be paranoid of being traced.

In conclusion it is definitely not right to infringe on a person’s privacy as it is a person’s right to have his whereabouts kept private as such to ensure his safety from dangerous people.

  4. Personally, I do not feel that with the advent of internet technologies and popularity of social networking sites, the amount of privacy that one has nowadays is largely compromised. This is because the amount of privacy that one person has is being controlled by that person. One example could be seen when social networking site such as Facebook, allow its users to control their privacy settings. This helps as strangers will not be able to see that person's profile if he/she decides not to let strangers see it. Furthermore, it is also not a must to disclose too much personal information on such social networking site unless the person wants to do so. Also, a person can choose if he/she wants to upload his/her personal photos. Therefore, the amount of privacy that one has is actually controlled by him/her.

In this lesson, I've learnt that many people have been leaking information about them or their families member on social networking sites such as Facebook because of carelessness. This then allow others to make use of the information to blackmail them. Which is why we should always be careful of what we post in the internet. The lesson has also talked about the ways to protect our privacy on the internet. Other than the above, this lesson also introduced the use of various technologies such as CCTV, RFID and GPS. It also talks about how they works and some facts of the technology.

Lastly, the answers for session 2 activity would be as follow:
1.The pro of the GPS would be the fact that it allows people to locate their family members if they are missing or lost their way. It can also locate cars and handphones. However, this is also the con as parents are starting to use the technology to track their children and wife would use this to track her husband. The GPS also helps when a person is navigating in unfamiliar places.
2.Yes it does infringe privacy issues as the company is able to track where the person is without any permission from the person. wherever the person goes should be personal and it is his rights.
3.No. I do not think that Singapore should have this kind of service too as it will mean that most of us will not be able to have privacy when others can track where we are going. This can even increase the rate of kidnapping.
4.No. I always feel that it is not right as everyone deserve to have some privacy. By doing things that can infringe a person’s privacy would mean that we are not showing respect to that person. Furthermore we would not want to have others infringe our privacy too.
