Reflect on the Information Overload and Attention Deficiency materials taught in Week 4. Also, share your views on the video.

  1. After some thoughts, I feel that attention deficiency is becoming a problem to youths. What I mean is that students are getting more and more distracted in lessons because of the many websites offered in the internet, such as Facebook and MSN, which turned the students’ attention to those websites rather than listening in class. I admit that I get easily distracted by those websites as I feel a constant need to check on any updates on Facebook. The lesson on attention deficiency makes me see what is happening to the youths nowadays, getting easily distracted and I certainly feel that this habit must be stopped as it will cause students to multi-task and lose their attention towards something more important.

The lesson on information overload make me feel that it is sometimes really needed to experience information overload as that experience can teaches us how to evaluate the information that is required and not required. Not only that, the information that is not required can be stored into our mind for further use or just for knowledge purposes. As such, I think it is not necessary a bad idea to experience information overload as the society we are in required us to almost know everything that we need to know, which I feel a need to experience information overload in some parts of our life. Example of it is doing a project, isn’t it good to be as detailed as possible in projects in order to show the audiences that it is a well-done in that aspect. As such, it really needs an experience of information overload in order to achieve that feat, isn’t it?

Next, the video about multi-tasking and internet-gaming addiction really enlightens me as it shows that sometimes technology is like a double-edged sword, which sometimes can be good for people and sometime not good for people. I feel that the video truly shows what is happening now to people hooked on the internet and the case-studies in the video really show the other side of technology.

Finally, after looking at the timetable that I had done in Excel, I feel that it is really according to the schedule of the timetable in every day of my life! However, I feel that it is sometimes good to follow such a timetable as everything is according to plan and I do not need to plan my next actions every single hour.

All in all, the CIS lesson of this week is really interesting as it shows the other side of how today youths are using the internet, though I really wished that the 1hour 20mins video can be shorten to about 45mins as I feel that it is a bit long!

  2. In this lesson i learnt about attention deficiency& information overload. &I feel that attention deficiency is affecting everyone not just student like us. For example, at home, while watching television and the phone rang, so you went to pick up the phone. So you chat &watch the tv at the same time. Just like student, playing Facebook, msn-ing &listening to lesson.
For information overload, i feel that is good to be hardworking, but not too hardworking, finding too many information some may disagree with another &thus causing one to be confuse ! So be hardworking, not too hardworking ! :D
The video , really surprise me on how much technology had affected everyone life. Lastly, making of the timetable at excel make me understand more of what i am doing everyday &how much time in spend on the net, doing nothing &studying.

  3. This week’s lesson was the most interesting of lesson because we touched on a subject that is highly debated issue multi-tasking. The video actually helped me learn a lot of thing about information overload and attention deficiency.
Information overload, I think, had been partially been solved by websites and search engines, like google and wikipedia. All the information we need can all be found at these websites so majority of us don't really find information from other sources unless we can’t find it on these sites, which hardly happens. Thus I feel that we this is not a major issue nowadays.
The video touched on the issue of multitasking, that I thought I knew about, but was unsure if it was true. Just because there are so much information out in the internet that just contradicts itself. I have a belief, that we should do one thing at a time and in that way we do things better, well at least that works for me. After watching this video, I feel good that, my belief is actually proven to be true. I don't really multi-task, because personally i feel that it is really hard to do two or more things at the same time. When I was in secondary 2, I tried to multi-task like my friends who played games on their phones during lesson; I found that I understood nothing at the end of the lesson just because I could not concentrate on the lesson.
The video also touched on game addiction. Shockingly, I had the same type of problems like the Korean boy, I played for around 4 to 6 hours a day. A reason for people being glued to games, which wasn’t highlighted by the video, was actually peer pressure. I clearly remember that I decided to play games because I did not want to be left out, and that provided me with a common subject to talk about with my friend. Sometimes, we wish to get off the game but our friends don't allow us to do, if we don't follow the bulk of the group we end up alienating ourselves form our friends. My wakeup call came when all my grades dipped severely. Luckily now i have control over my addiction and I limit myself to playing only on weekends for only around two hours a day.
Attention deficiency was another issue highlighted by the video; personally I think everyone goes through the problem of attention deficiency. Most of us wander off unknowingly during lectures to sites like Facebook. For example, if we are having a lecture on COS and we have read ahead of the lesson or already know what is being taught we, automatically most of us start wandering off onto to the web. I think that the video is right and if we pay a little more attention to our studies we may actually do better. I am personally going to try my level best to pay attention during lectures.
Lastly wish to talk about the part of the video when the army uses technology to entice people to join the army. This is actually already happening in Singapore. Singapore's government is trying its level best to get people to see national service, more positively. I am one of the people whose perspective changed towards NS. Being in the NCC, I was exposed to a lot of unique practices using technology such as IMT simulation, where we get to practice shooting virtually for marksmanship, training competitions; various weapon simulations, such as rocket launchers, grenade launcher that we got to try during a course at a Joo Koon Camp; the army open house where they displayed even more virtual reality games, which is open to public. Finally the most exciting of them all was going for life firing at a firing range. All this has helped shape a very exciting image of NS for me. Thus we can see how Singapore uses the same tactics used in the video to get people more interested in the army.
lastly I would like to talk about the calendar that we made during lesson I actually found out that there was a lot of time that I was wasting doing nothing. I always thought I had no time to do anything else, but after looking at the calendar I saw that I have to use my time to the fullest.

  4. After this week lesson, I feel that actually many people are actually falling prey to attention deficiency and information overload but they just have not realized it yet.

The reason why many students are having information overload is because they have yet to find the right way in searching for information on the internet. Therefore causing them be confused by the presence of too much information and thus having difficulty in understanding the subject.

Attention deficiency is happening to everyone as more people like to use facebook and having a msn chat while listening to their teacher. This happened to almost every polytechnic students as they are having their laptop on during lessons which is the reason why some of them do not know what their teacher is teaching.

The video that we were told to watch was informative as it shows me how computer gaming has actually harmed teenagers and students. More teenagers are getting addicted to gaming and no longer want to socialize with others or even communicate with their family members. Therefore, it is important to educate them and get them to cut down their gaming session by organizing camps for them to interact with others instead of playing computer games.
I am also amazed by how kids are educated on how to use computer smartly when they are young so that they will not be addicted to gaming.

Lastly, I feel that we should also implement this in singapore so that the younger generations will use computer smartly and not affect their daily life. Especially when we learnt that there is a iN2015 plan for more singaporeans to be IT savvy.

  6. This week's lesson was an introspective experience. The truth is that almost all of us suffer from the pitfalls of the internet, including information overload and gaming addiction.

I think that the scary part about multi-tasking and constant distractions is the false sense of security. It has become second nature to most of us, we automatically check our phones every 5 minutes even if we haven't received a message. We often google something that comes to mind before even being conscious of it.

A large part of the appeal of the internet, in my own opinion, is human emotions. We can overcome any challenge in a fantasy world, games often have scalable achievements that appeal to our sense of pride. In the the world of online games, we are not held back by our age, race or shortcomings, we are free to express ourselves without fear of embarrassment. The ability to meet other like minded people also offers a wider diversity of friends than the real world.

In the real world, we are restricted by our social circles: school, work, church, tuition, etc. With little to no chance to meet people outside these circles, and even if by chance we do meet someone not from our circles, we have little time to spend with them on a regular basis. But in the game, we can spend hours upon hours daily on adventures with people from different part of the world.

As for gaming addiction, I feel that ultimately it is a choice on the part of the gamer. They feel that the online world as a whole has more to offer them then the real world. It is understandable because of how the game world gives them a sense of achievement and connection whereas in the real world, the students have to sit through hours of boring lessons or excruciating PE lessons. Gaming is merely the most convenient outlet for them, if they didn't game they would do something else.

Personally the question that I found most interesting in the video was whether the internet and its distractions helped or hampered students in their learning. The feedback from MIT students about the short bursts of attention manifested in the paragraph by paragraph essay. The internet offers nearly unlimited possibility, one can learn almost everything from ancient history to modern physics, software like Rosetta Stone even helps us learn new languages.

The downside of all of that promise however, is that students instead choose to read summaries of classic literature, they learn to use the internet to distract themselve with engrossing games rather than concentrate and expand their horizons. They are unable to pursue a single train of thought for long period of time. But these negative habits a matter of choice, we can choose everytime we turn on our computer, to ignore distractions and expand our horizons. Ultimately, it boils down to perseverence and hardwork. Only then can we reach the ideal of the digital native, with stunning knowledge of languages, arts, literature, culture and technological mastery.

  7. After this week's lesson, i have learned that Attention deficiency & Information overload has to be dealt with utmost importance as if it is left aside, the results and consequences arising from it can be very severe.
Also, from the video that we were asked to view, i have really learned lots of things such as how technology can change a person's life. As from the video, the most intersting part for me is the computer gaming addiction in South Korea.

From the video, I can see that game addiction makes users play compulsively, isolating themselves from family and friends or from other forms of social contact, and focus almost entirely on in-game achievements rather than broader life events.
For example we saw the part of the South Korea thing where the people there are like so addicted.
“Students in South Korea stay overnight in lan shops to play games” Awesome?!

However I feel that the friends and family members of the victim must help them recover from this disease by giving good advice and asking them to manage their time in playing games better. Also helps from the government can be useful as well where the Government organise free internet rescue camps to help addicted.

In addition, these students had to seek medical treatment for conditions that resulted from excessive usage of the computuer such as ear complications and eye strain. Thus, overall I feel that it is good to play a lot of games but don’t cross the line!

  8. Information Overload is pretty commonplace now that almost all of us are granted access to the internet. Although

being overloaded with information may lead to poor health and mental capacity, I am slightly appreciative of the

fact that we have such a vast expanse of information (it is up to us to manage it well).

On another note, in our modern lifestyles, we tend to multitask a lot. In my opinion, when multitasking is done

well, it serves as a huge advantage as one can toggle between tasks when there is a wait time (television

commercials, work etc.); this greatly increases efficiency. However, some people overdo multitasking and attempt to

perform way too many tasks at once. This results in poor performance distributed across the person's work.

The video shows interesting problems with multitasking (people who claim to do well don't), and the state of

internet addiction in Korea. The video highlights a problem which only exists in first world countries as this problem would not exist without rapid uptake of technology. I believe this problem is still relatively new, hence much awareness should be brought about it. Apart from an apparent (slight) bias, the video is relatively interesting to watch, although incredibly long.

  9. The lesson has taught me one very important thing: that Attention deficiency & Information overload is a very serious case that people like us often face with.

With the extensive database that is available to us on the internet, we can be very stressed when we are researching on a very popular topic. Also with so much information, we will have a hard time deciding which source is more accurate than the others.

Okay, Attention deficiency, another big thing almost everyone who uses the computer/TV/mobile devices will experience. Face it or not, once we engage in surfing the net when we are trying to do our work, our productivity level falls.

One thing about multi taskers (people who multi-task on the computer) is that they are actually not good at multi tasking. The video showed us that people who multi-task are actually slower than people who do not multi-task mentally. This is definitely mind boggling to me since I multi-task on my computer very frequently.

Also in the video,it showed us how addictive computer gaming is. South Korea is depicted in the video as an example, but I'm confident to say that all developed country faces this problem of "problem gaming". In Singapore, this is definitely a problem for many youths. They keep on playing their computer games and neglect their family/friends and studies. This is almost as bad as gambling. However with a certain level of discipline, gaming is good for leisure purposes.

  15. This lesson has taught me a valuable experience about Information Overload and Attention Deficiency. I feel that Information Overload is affecting everyone, and it is a serious issue that should not be overlooked.
With Information Overload, People would be overburdened with too much information and would not be able to determine the accuracy or reliability of the information involved or they might not be able to understand the information, and hence they would be unable to make a good decision due to the great amount of information they have to process and understand quickly. In addition, Information Overload has many negative impacts in our pursuit to understand the information and making decisions. Being too focused on a piece of information, for example, greatly hinders our ability to make good decisions by forcing us to rely only on that information instead of looking at a wider perspective.
However, I feel that people have to be able to learn to deal with information Overload and look for cues that determine the validity of the information quickly, as putting it simply, this is the information age. In the information age, Rapid changes around the world would mean that large amounts of information would reach us very quickly, and learning to deal with information Overload would be a valuable experience in teaching us how to manage large amounts of information quickly and makes decision faster while minimizing the negative impacts of information Overload at the same time.

Attention Deficiency is also a serious issue that affects everyone. Attention Deficiency reduces our work performance and causes us to lose our focus on what we need to do. personally felt the impact as I was typing this out. While doing some homework, I found myself stopping to check out things on Facebook, IM to my friends and the like, hence disrupting my focus on my work. Attention Deficiency affects us through our loss of focus and distractions. In addition, Attention Deficiency reduces our ability to absorb information and learn as our attention is focused on something else.

The video has taught me many things about Multi-taskers. Multi-tasking has good and bad aspects. With Multi-tasking, we are able to do 2 or more things in a set amount of time than if we are focused only on 1 thing. This saves a lot of time and frees up more time for other purposes. However, the video has also revealed to me that possible bad effects of Multi-tasking. As one does more and more multi-tasking, the quality of their work and efficiency suffers; hence there is a point where Multi-tasking can only help us so much.

The video has also shown me that problem of Gaming Addiction is a serious problem that is prevalent in developed countries. Gaming addiction has a lot of negative impacts on the gamer himself. It affects the gamers’ health, social circle and disrupts his daily schedule as the gamer takes time meant for more important things to play. Notably, it has affected South Korea deeply. I feel that the South Korean government has doing a good job to help Gaming addicts to recover their lives lost these gamers spent too much time on the computer. I feel that children and teenagers must be educated on the impacts of gaming addiction and that they should exercise discipline and moderate the amount of time they spend on the computer.

  16. That lesson is very interesting. It was like learning what we had been doing all this while yet, never realise it. Actually, i was on the facebook replying all those Birthday wishes sent to me while Mr Andrew was conducting the lesson. *facepalm*

Information overload is very common nowadays. Especially during lessons(not going to mention who's lesson) where I didn't have time to absorb and digest the information properly. It's very stressful at times and will affect my mentality. For example: sudden break down, having thoughts of giving up and thoughts of why am i stressing myself. In such a way, it's good because I am able to doe proper self reflection on my ability to handle work properly and thus, improve myself.

Attention Deficiency is also common! Who doesn't face that problem. This happens when we get bored at something that we are doing and diverted our attention to other things such as MSN, Facebook chat/games or even surfing the internet. We usually call it multi-tasking, which is bad. I did that too though; like i was revising for a test and i wanted to know how the soccer match is coming along, so i revise while hearing the soccer match commentary which i find it a joke because who does it? So, i learned to do 1 thing at a time because somehow, i will lose focus on revising.

The video that I watched was interesting. It showed how dependent we are towards technology and computers in our lives. We use it for our school work, gaming and socializing. This have both the positive and negative effects. Positive: Enables us to connect with friends and families without meeting them and complete our homeworks quickly. Negative: Addictive gaming will cause the person's life to be very dead. It's like the game had already taken total control over the person's mind which is very harmful. This will prevent the person to be less exposed of the world outside, which is the real world. They need to realise that the cyber world is completely different from the real world where adventures are much more thrilling to venture in.

  17. Through the week's lesson of information overload and attention deficiency, I found out I was of no exception to this modern day virus. The hard solid fact is that each of us suffers from the modern day virus without being really conscious of it. It would be a lie to say that I have never been a victim of this modern day virus.

After all, I am sort of conscious being a multi-tasking warrior who is constantly distracted. It has come to a point that I would automatically check at my phone or email every few minutes. I also have to confess that I used to spend lots of hours playing MMORPG games online, which is something common to see these days. In my own opinion, games are one of the way one can choose as his/her stress reliever as it gives the player satisfactory feeling by levelling the avatar to a certain level or having the avatar to complete certain quests/achievements.

However, playing games would have a total meaning to game addict. Game addict plays game not to relief the stress but to escape from the reality. It is true that the virtual world offers the player a lot more freedom and is more democratic which is unlike the real world. To add on, because virtual world seem more attractive than the real world, game addict tend to spent most of their time in front of the computer instead of hanging out with friends or going shopping with their girlfriend.

I found out that this modern day virus have almost no cure like AIDS, once contracted, equal instant death. In regard to the video, I find the part on the army experience interesting as it was a rather interesting way of recruiting new young men into the army.
In conclusion, I feel that the modern day virus one and only cure is to teach the young children the way like how the South Korean children are taught. That would be the only possible cure in my opinion.

  18. Right now, all of us are using the internet. Tons of information are just a click away. However, it doesn't mean that all information WILL be in the web. Also, there might be too much information coming to us from one-word searches, research on general terms etc.

All this might be good, and it might be bad. From my point of view, too little and too much information is definitely not a good thing. Too little information does not allow us to conduct enough research or learn much, too much information just makes us spend too much time on one topic.

What we all need is to be able to manage information properly in this time and age, while learning how to do work efficiently. I believe if we work hard to cultivate good habits and get rid of bad habits, working with the internet will definitely be much easier.

Next, about the video. Firstly, i think multi-tasking is a habit that many people have picked up, and it's not exactly very useful. In short, it's like an exchange between time and quality(of whatever you are doing). If multi-tasking decreases your focus and reduces the quality of your work, i think it's better not to multi-task when doing homework or something important. However, when surfing the net, i think it's pretty ok to multi-task, because sometimes i open up to over 10 tabs of forum pages to read different pages of information.

Secondly, i think game addiction in South Korea is really serious. it's obvious because from the video, they said that they know it's bad to be play so much, but they still do it anyway. They are like 'casualties of the digital revolution', as quoted from the movie. 10-15 years ago, people believed in the positive effects that technology would bring about, but didn't really think about the negative effects. Maybe this is what resulted in the addictions.

But games also has its good points. It's a very useful platform for socializing. It offers a very different experience from the real world, where you can be a King if you wanted to. And it's better than things like Instant Messaging because it gives very good visuals and better interaction. It's amazing how connections are formed and how close they can get to each other even though they've never met.
Second Life can even be used to conduct meetings.

On a closing note, I think technology has definitely transformed our way of living in the past few years. Be it good or bad, we have accepted this way of life, and we have adapted to this new culture. I think what we have to do now, is to get rid of our bad habits and learn how to maximise the potential of this digital age. =)

  19. After the lesson, it is highlighted that attention deficiency and information overload is an issue amongst people today. Most of the time we won't be focused doing something. For myself, I will surf facebook or the internet from time to time just for the sake of surfing and there is actually no purpose for me to surf.

Information overload is annoying, but can't be helped. For me, if I enter a webpage with too much information, I won't bother reading through because I'm someone who do not like to read. Thus, if it's a whole page of words, I will not make the effort to read further. Sometimes, it might not even be neccessary to read through the whole article but there is no other way to extract useful information from the article but to read through everything! It's a very tedious thing to do, especially if it's late at night. Sometimes too much information is given, and we are not able to notice those more important points in the article/news.

The video was too long.. and it's a bit boring. It's quite hard to watch the video without doing something else, this may be the cause of attention deficiency, when something is ongoing for a while, you lose focus and need to do something else.

Multi-tasking was one of the issues brought up in the video. It is quite common for people to multi-task these days, whether they know it, or they do it unknowingly. Sometimes when I do my work, I just need the music to be playing. I don't actually listen but I just need the background music. Some ppl may say I'm wasting electricity, but it's easier to lose focus without a background distraction for me. Most of the time people SMS and talk to their friends at the same time, this is another form of multi-tasking that people have gotten so used to that we don't even realise we're doing it!

Addiction to gaming is another more focused topic from the video. I feel that these facilities are actually catered to the people in order to cause these problems. For example in South Korea as we've seen from the video, it is said that there is a problem and there were actually deaths caused by overnight gaming for a few days. But you still see many gaming shops that these teens can visit to stick to their games, and since the shop owners are getting paid for the service, they wouldn't turn these youths away. This is doing them harm instead of helping to curb the problem. Gaming addiction has become a problem to many countries, even in Singapore. It can lead to very serious problems like having the gamer (probably a youth) become very violent as they do not know how to differentiate between the virtual world and reality after a certain period of time. As we saw from the boy who was sent to a rehabilitation camp, he only thought of the game. Thus, I feel that these camps may not be the best solution. By making these youths take part in these camps and keeping them away from their computers/laptops for days may just cause them to spend more hours over the games because of the craving they had for the past week or so. Thus I feel that this problem should be solved from the root, where youths should be controlled from the beginnig by limiting the number of hours they spend on gaming, as the outcome will definitely be better when it becomes a habit to game for a limited period of time per day.

However, the problem not only lies amongst the youths. We also see adults on games such as World of Warcraft, and there is even this club that they can join to know more people in person when they club organises gatherings to play the game. In addition, there was this lady who mentioned that she was so engrossed with the game that she resigned from her job. Maybe the society should think about what we're doing to make our lives better/worse off.

  20. I feel that Information Overload is present in our everyday life. For example, it happens during research. Every time we research for something, we are given additional information that we don't need. This causes us to process all that additional information and put it into words. Information Overload affects us in many ways. For example, some people tend to turn more lazy due to it. Others, tend to give too much information, which is unnecessary sometimes. Information Overload usually leads to the "Copy & Paste" habit, where people tend to just copy the whole chunk of information and paste it without even understanding it. Information processing is a tiring process for the human brain, thus Information Overload is definitely not a small matter.

Attention Deficiency is also a serious matter. Some people call multi-tasking as a "skill". However, the human mind isn't suited to concentrate on different things at the same time. Although multi-tasking might seem efficient, the result produced by multi-tasking is less impressive than not multi-tasking. Personally, multi-tasking is evident in my life. When doing homework, I always tend to check my Facebook, which is already a form of distraction and multi-tasking.

I think that Information Overload and Attention Deficiency is closely related. Multi-tasking is a form of Attention Deficiency, where you are distracted to do something else. That also leads to Information Overload. By multi-tasking, you need to process all the information of all the things that you're doing at that moment.

From the video, I was able to explicitly see the impact of IT in our lives. It's evident that IT is changing humans, be it negatively or positively. In my life, the biggest impact of IT is gaming. Gaming is indeed enjoyable, but one can get addicted very easily. In the end, it all comes down to self-discipline. However, IT also brought us many different conventions, such as Instant Messaging. This enables family and communities to communicate easily and not lose touch with each other.

Information Overload and Attention Deficiency is definitely not a virus or a disease. It's more of a habit and a mental condition. I feel that IT is affecting man without man even realizing it. However, IT is necessary in this developing world. In the end, it all comes down to: how you use the technology provided for us.

  22. I agree that there is too much information and so we have information overload. Due to this, we might end up in either looking for too little information or wasting time looking for more. With an increase in channels of information and new information produced daily, we need to see the accuracy and the reliability of the resources as there is ease of duplication. By managing information overload, we have to have good time management, be very clear on what needs to be done, search for info intelligently, set deadlines and evaluate info critically using the AOQCC. Before this lesson, I did not consider information overload as a problem as I think having a lot of information will help in research. However, after the lesson, I am more aware of it and think that I might have been wasting time looking for unnecessary information.

Attention Deficiency is due to the excessive usage in the Internet such as games which are potentially more serious than information overload. It leads to the lack of attention in one’s daily life. They will be glued to the computer and not spend time on the more important things in life. This will then led to unproductive academic performance and poor social life. I have been addicted to watching dramas which led me to being stuck to the computer as I kept watching one episode after the next. Luckily, it was only twenty episodes but I spent three days watching the whole drama. Nevertheless, I refrain from watching dramas again as I wasted a lot of time when there are so many other things that can be done in that amount of time.

The video showed the horrible things that the net can do to us such as making us not use our brains effectively as info is readily available for us. It also covers game addiction. One part that grabs my attention was when a boy was addicted to the computer game and finds it difficult to get away from it. He spends so little time with his family and friends and was sent to a camp to get away from his computer. I am aware of how bad game addiction can be. It can really make you forget about every other thing that is important to you. Having an addiction is bad as one will be obsessed with it and wants to keep playing or doing it. I got addicted once and manage to get away with it as I was on vacation and thus was able to not play that game for some time. Game addiction, if possible, should be avoided. It is fine to play games once in a while to relax but not all the time.

The video also covers a portion about multi-tasking. It does a little survey and found that nobody can really multi-task very well. I think it is good to multi-task as long as you get all the things done. It is no point doing so many things and none of them is done. I multi-task too and sometimes I am not even aware of it. I will be doing research and suddenly I will be doing some other things like checking my mails or going to other websites. I do get distracted easily when I am online. Sometimes, I will not even be aware of my surrounding and not hear if someone is talking to me. I have tried multi-tasking but realize that I will be lost as in class for example I will miss what the teacher just said as I was busy chatting or messaging.

I believe that stillness in my life away from technology is important and necessary as sometimes we have to take a step back and look at the significant details in our life. I love it when my family and I go on vacation as we get to get away from technology and our busy life. We get to appreciate life more and spent quality time with each other. Only thing is, we don’t really get to do this often so we have to adjust and try not to spent too much time on the net.

  23. Information Overload
I feel information overload is a very important topic covered, we have a lot of projects that require research and we will definitely use the internet to research. The vast amount of information of the internet makes it hard for us to find what we need, and as such we will tend to find more information than we need to confirm previous information we found is correct, and often times we end up making the wrong decisions due to the inability to process all these information we found properly. I have definitely encountered this problem, where I had to research on obesity for a project. I will Google up obesity and open a lot of tabs before sieving through and using only about 2 or 3 sites. To prevent information overload, I think it’s best to stick to one or two trusted sites, for example for obesity I will refer to the World Health Organization’s site. Another way is to use Wikipedia, find the information we want and check the site the information is referenced from.

    Attention Deficiency
Let’s face it: if you use a computer to do work, you will suffer from this. There is so much going on the internet that it is very likely we are unable to concentrate on our task at hand. A very good example is now, attempting to write this. For the past 30 minutes I just went on to check Facebook, chat with friends a bit and scrolling through more Youtube videos for the music, but ended up watching them anyway before coming back here to write this sentence. I feel the best way to prevent attention deficiency is to remove all the things that distracts you. When I do my computing math homework on paper I will always close my laptop and focus entirely on that piece of paper. What about projects where you have to research? I will just have to discipline myself to not switch to the Facebook tab every few minutes.

    Timetable
Making the timetable was very interesting, and I learnt a lot about myself. I find that I have almost no free time on weekdays, yet on weekends I have so much free time I will just waste it. As I complete what I need to do for school on the day itself most of the time, I will have a lot of free time on weekends which I will do things just to waste time such as staring at Facebook, reading some articles, watching anime or playing games (while doing all these the only thing in my mind is for time to pass). I feel I should fix my weekend timetable by restarting some of my hobbies like practicing magic and also practice my programming which I consider quite fun. In the future once I receive my shooting license it is likely I will go out practicing shooting every weekend.

  24. Video
The video was extremely interesting to watch, and I have a lot to say about every single section of the video.

    Multi-tasking
No one can truly multi-task, that’s what I feel and the video showed I was right. When someone uses Facebook, do homework, check email, check their phone and whatnot at the same time, they are not really multi-tasking but in fact just switching through all these activities rapidly. This means the attention given to each activity is split up to small amounts (Note: Attention Deficiency). I would say I'm also a culprit of this, constantly looking at Facebook while doing ANYTHING, from listening in class to doing my work.

    Gaming (and Army)
I'm sure this topic has been done to dead by many of us in writing essays or debating if cyber-gaming is good or bad. The video showed how a South Korea teenager has been affected by gaming, and what I saw did not surprise me. This is a major problem occurring around the world, where teenagers just get so hooked up in their games that they have totally disconnected from real life, not knowing what’s happening around them. I personally have did something like this, just gaming for hours and hours a few years ago (I do sleep though). The only thing that cured me is that I got bored and as such stopped playing. It is notable that what I played (MapleStory) and what people played in the videos (Warcraft III, Starcraft II) are all multiplayer games. I feel this is one of the contributing factor in why they are able to play for so long, as friends will drag you into the game and due to peer pressure it is very likely you will just continue playing with them. That is the reason why I stopped playing multiplayer games and just played single player games, since single player games have less replay value and will only take up that small amount of time. This is probably also the cause of why people see me as anti-social (before Facebook appeared) since the only thing other people want to talk about their multiplayer games which I don't play. This brings me to the point where gamers are anti-social. They may say that they have tons of friends online but have they met anyone of them? If they met them can they communicate to each other properly? The video showed Blizzcon where the gamers actually met up but you can see most of their age is about 20-40. Can people who play games since they are 10 and don't care about real life be able to communicate properly? I doubt so. The video showed that South Korea have a programme that is suppose to cure teenagers of their addiction by letting them do things that they failed to do in their childhood, which I felt was good, but as the video showed the teenager is unlikely to change. I feel that the best way to cure them of their addiction is to just take the games away from them, and force them back into real life. It may be drastic but it will work, as they will have no choice but to move away from their games.
The video also showed how the US army used games to attract teenagers to join the army. They have set-up a center with a lot of famous war games like the Call of Duty series. The message I picked up from this is the war and games are same, which is obviously not. The video showed that the teenagers know real war and games are totally different, but do they represent all teenagers? I'm sure everyone knew about the incident where a few counter-strike players went on to play it in real life, killing people. Are they sure this incident won't repeat? Of course not, as this is what they want, getting them to participate in real war. They will kill people like it is totally okay to do that. They will no longer be human.

  25. Teaching with technology
Singapore is definitely doing this. We nowadays must use computers to research on information and present this information with computers. But is it all good, bringing laptops to class as a study tool? From personal experience it is highly unlikely we will only be looking at study notes in class. I have surfed Facebook and many different websites in class (More attention deficiency). It is very hard to ensure the student is listening in class and not playing games on their laptops. I feel the way to fix this (and also gaming addiction) is to expose technology to kids when they are young. By teaching them early, it will be drilled into them what is right and what is not and as such any future problems can be avoided.

    Humans are getting stupid
The video made a extremely interesting point on how our generation are getting more and more stupid due to technology, and I have to agree with it. As technology is making our life easier, it is only natural that we do not have the need to know certain things. An example would be writing. If we are able to type faster on a keyboard, why bother writing? Another way technology is making us stupid is attention deficiency. We are constantly getting distracted by other things such as facebook and as such our thoughts are unable to flow, as such we are unable to think as deep as we are able to, only looking at the surface. Our essays are written in short bursts and the points do not flow since we probably go on to check our Facebook every few lines. We can no longer write as well as we used to be.

    Virtual Worlds
When I watch through this section in the video, how IBM uses second life to host meetings and do everything, how World of Warcraft have allowed many people to meet, the thing that almost immediately came into my mind was how screwed up it is. We are disconnecting from real life and connecting to these virtual worlds to do everything. It feels as though we have transferred our life and soul into a virtual world and we in real life is just a shell to communicate with the virtual world. It just feels so wrong. A movie my computer studies teacher in sec 2 got us to watch to bring us to the attention how dangerous technology can be felt very similar to the current situation, and that movie is Matrix. In Matrix humans are just connected to a virtual world with ports in our bodies and we just live in that virtual world. The big difference between Matrix and IBM is that in Matrix its due to robots taking over the world and putting humans there, but in IBM they did this on their own. It just isn't right. Another movie that I thought was similar is Summer Wars, where humans have created a virtual world which connects to everything: our phones, our computers, our cars, traffic lights, stock exchanges and even satellite controls. People use this virtual world to work and play, such as doctors checking up on patients (note similarity to iN2015) or fighting game tournaments (they call it a sport). The plot was that an insane rouge artificial intelligence cracked the main protection for the virtual world and gain control to everything, stealing many accounts and causing many problems in real life. Traffic stalled due to the car GPS not showing the correct information, and a old woman died because information on her heart beat could not be sent over to the doctor. The reason why I brought this movie up is that if our life is so much dependent on such a system, what will happen if the system goes down? Will we still be able to survive?

  26. My fixes and recommendations
From the way I wrote about every part of the video, it sounds like the future with technology seems extremely grim. This is why I thought up of some fixes for our current situation. From the above I wrote about how many things are due to a disconnection from real life and living completely in the virtual world. To fix it we can combine the real world with the virtual world. With recent technologies such as the Kinect and Virtual Reality it’s definitely possible. People can wear VR goggles which can show more display virtual things in the real world. In meetings you can see other people at a meeting room but its all virtual reality. This is much better than communicating through a 2D screen with a keyboard and mouse. Another important fix is teaching children from young about technology and how to properly use it. By teaching them early it would be drilled into them what is right and what is wrong thus in the future they are more likely to have the correct thinking. As a future IT professional, I hope I am able to aid in fixing all these problems and not cause any more of them.

  32. This lesson was about attention deficiency and information overload. Personally, I feel that i suffer from both of these quite a bit, which can be troublesome sometimes, but I feel that it is okay to be this way since everyone else is doing it. Seriously though, it is a problem.

Information overload is something which is stressful and can cause someone to be unable to think straight. For me, I think it stops my ability to think about ideas and scenarios, making me focus only on what my senses sense at the moment. This is annoying as it prevents me from doing any work of any sort, as I will be unable to grasp what the questions ask, or what the teacher wants done from me. Even though this means I think less and do less things, it is irritating as I know that I should be doing something productive but will be unable to do it, such as homework. The worse part is that I usually encounter this problem, as I am indecisive with my actions and thoughts.

For the attention deficiency problem, I feel that it is becoming a bigger issue as time goes on, since more things can be done with the same device. This promotes the use of less physical objects, meaning that it is easy to switch between doing one thing and doing another thing. This is an issue as in the future, when I and the other people in class will be working, this will cause us to be unproductive with our time. In fact, this already is making us unproductive with our time, for those of us who have it. Although this is bad, I like to think that there is a bright side to it, as, since we know what it is like to be attention deficient, it would hopefully be easier to prevent later on in my life. Of course, I still wish I didn't have it, but I try to control it as much as can, although it might not be that bad when doing unimportant work, as it could help to keep someone like me entertained since I would not keep on the same thing for too long. In fact, it might help boost some skills, since that means the attention deficient person will experience more experiences and could benefit.

On the topic on the video and being addicted to the internet, I think that is perfectly fine as long as you do not compromise your health while doing it. Maybe it is because I do not think I have ever had an addiction before, but i think that people get addicted to things because they enjoy it. As such, I have no problem with people having fun doing what they want to do. Personally, I would not mind getting addicted to a specific thing, as long as my health and study is not compromised as a result. Who knows, maybe my attention deficiency would leave me due to me having experience doing a certain task multiple times over and over again.

As for multi-tasking, I feel that it should be okay. Of course, priorities should still be kept, however I believe that there is a place for multi-tasking in life, such as during leisure time, when you would like to do more with the time you have. Based on the video, people who multi-task make less efficient use of their time, however, if they feel that they are being more productive, then I don't see a problem.

  34. Attention deficieny seems to be happening to every single one of us.
students, teachers, adults in working society.
The thing is if it is to larger extend or a lesser extend.
Everyone is always multi-tasking in life.
Students like us multi-task often take example, we often surf the net while revising our work or even doing our homework.
Since it has been shown that multi tasking is not good as it affects our efficiency rate i think when we are doing our homework or something important we should just complete them quickly before proceeding with other work.
I do also suffer from this, as i used to do work while surfing facebook and twitter. Hence i will learn to finish up important work before surfing the net or doing some other things.
